Hi Mike:

I tried to leave a comment on your blog but couldn't seem to get it to publich - I didn't want to ID myself with a link so maybe that is why it wouldn't go. So, here is what I wrote. If you like you can insert it in your comments under Obama's Speech. For what it's worth - here it is - use it if you want:

"Regarding Obama's speech, I think it was indeed brave, timely, and needed. I'm not sure if it will tip in his favor or against him in the final analysis. Regarding his pastor's comments, people - get a grip. Even though his delivery is controversial through his style (hyperbole) much of what he said regarding his accusations was in fact true - to the shame of American history. Check it out with a bit of research. But you have to remember, he was speaking to "his" people who are used to this kind of sermonizing style that emphasizes the dramatic, although he did step over the mark on one or two points. What he said is part of their collective experience, history, world view. We whites just don't know how to take it - I suppose, and get offended.
So, now, here is Obama trying to make sense of the convoluted and disparate aspects in a way that appeases both whites, blacks and many other ethnics as well. It is a high order - maybe impossible. Time will tell.
JG."
